James, son of Edward and Ellen Marshal of Ainsdale, was christened on 15 Jan 1797 in Formby, Lancashire.[1]
This James Marshall was previously connected to Mary Howard (1799-) as a spouse. However, further research shows that there were two couples named James and Mary Marshall that have likely been conflated.
The two likely marriages applying to these couples were:
Marriage: 24 Apr 1820 St Thomas, Melling, Lancashire
Marriage: 8 Aug 1820 St Cuthbert, Churchtown, Lancashire
Starting in 1820, there were two sets of children with parents James and Mary Marshall, both christened in North Meols, Lancashire. One set gave the parents' abode as Birkdale, while the other gave the parents' abode as Scarisbrick.
The 1841 census proves that these are two distinct families, with the Scarisbrick-based family living in Scarisbrick, and the Birkdale-based family living in North Meols.
The Scarisbrick family.[2]

It is likely safe to conclude that the James Marshall born in 1797 in Ainsdale and represented by this profile was the father of the Scarisbrick family. His parents lived in Scarisbrick by about 1805, with his father Edward dying there in 1814. The Scarisbrick family also had a son named Edward, while the Birkdale family did not. Note that naming a son after the parents' father was extremely common in this population.
However, later census records are slightly confusing on this point. In 1851, the census states that birthplace of the Scarisbrick James as Formby in about 1801.[4] Although the age is off by a few years, the place of birth Formby aligns with a birthplace in Ainsdale (which is part of Formby parish). In contrast, in 1861, James Marshall of Scarisbrick's birthplace was given as Birkdale in about 1795.[5]
It has proven difficult to determine which marriage belongs to which couple, especially as most of their children were born prior to civil registration. However, both couples had a two-year-old Elizabeth Marshall living with them at the time of the 1841 census.
According to Lancashire BMD (https://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/), there was an Elizabeth Marshall born in Scarisbrick in 1838 with the mother's maiden name Aughton. There were two Elizabeth Marshalls born in North Meols with the mother's maiden name Howard in the same timeframe, one in 1837 and one in 1838.
This seems to suggest that James Marshall of Scarisbrick married Mary Aughton, not Mary Howard, and is the reason why Mary Howard (1799-) has been removed as a spouse.
