Presumably since Alice's last name is unknown, it should be merged into Unknown-575084

I couldn't do the proposed merge as it was the wrong direction with Unknown-575084 into Alice-75, so I have rejected that and proposed Alice-75 into Unknown-575084.

Andrew, next time you see this you can reverse the numbers on the compare page without rejecting and entering. smiley

There was no option for that - I looked very carefully. I think this was because the merge had already been proposed in February.
Every merge always has the wording to change the direction of the merge when the surnames do not match exactly.  It isn't there when the surnames match because it forces to the lowest sequence.

This is all I see for the merge I proposed today:

Comparing Alice-75 (L) and Unknown-575084 (R)

If these two profiles represent the same person merge them Help. Before doing so, scroll down to check the biographies and comments — not just the basic data. You might find the comparison report on WikiTree+ useful. Help If more research is needed, you can postpone with an Unmerged Match Help. If they just look alike create a Rejected Match Help so they won't be confused in the future.

Where is the wording to change the direction?

Andrew, that is the text from the comparison screen. When you go to the Merge screen to complete the merge, if the  LNAB is different, or if the direction is incorrect, there will always be an option to change the direction of the merge.   By rejecting a merge to change the direction, it has to wait another 30 days before it can be merged.

AS Pat said, that is on the comparison page.  When you say to merge them and they are approved, you see at the top the 2 names, such as 'merging Surname-1 into Surname-2'.  In the big orange box, above the explanation box, it has the following:  (Note - I bolded the line below and changed coloring to show where the change can be made)

Do not complete this merge unless Surname-2 is the correct Last Name at Birth. If Surname-1 is correct, click here to reverse the merge. If neither is correct, change the Last Name at Birth on Surname-2 before doing the merge. If you have found multiple duplicates with different last names, identify the final WikiTree ID before doing any merges. [more information]
