With regard to  documents that I have obtained from municipalities and personal family collections, when uploading the digitally scanned image of those documents, what is the better format, Jpg or pdf?

JPEG gets my vote. I am sure others with more knowledge of photos will reply but I think a PDF does not show without clicking on it and having it open in another tab. Not sure about that but jpegs show up all the time on a profile.

I agree with Virginia. For a single image (or an image of a single page), JPG is the better format to use.

Use PDF if you are uploading a multi-page source document.
