Get desktop software.

I suspect virtually all have the ability to produce an ahnentafel   (as well as register, or descendants) style report, as well a pedigree charts, and others.

Some software is more sophisticated than others, and easily produces a very professional looking product that you can get bound.

I use a couple of different products: PAF in connection with Charting Companion and RootsMagic 7 (version 8 is current).

PAF is a rather old program formerly distributed by the LDS Church, but is no longer supported (even though it is old it runs on Windows 10). Charting Companion reads the PAF file and produces the report in a format you can choose. I use the Word compatible file, and subsequently polish the report from there.

In RootsMagic you use the RootMagic Publisher function to build the report. As an example you can define a report as follows

  • Cover page
  • Title page
  • Copyright page
  • Table of contents
  • Preface or other free text sections
  • Pedigree chart(s)
  • Ahnentafel for an individual; you can have more than one.
  • Bibliography
  • Index of persons (all persons in the pedigree charts are narrative are indexed together)
  • Index of places.

Sources can be footnotes or end notes. All sections are optional.

If the report is to be printed double sided you can tell Publisher to insert blank pages so each section starts on a right hand (or odd numbered) page.

Once the report is defined it can be generated on demand and printed or saved in a variety of formats (pdf, rtf, etc).

I suspect all the major products presently on the market will do similar. A number of these have trial versions so you can get a sense of what the software will do; however, the trial versions will not have all the functions.

Charting Companion will read the data file from a number of different programs, and produce reports and charts.

I would think it depends on how elaborate you want it to be? The following items come to mind:

  • table of contents
  • pictures
  • the ahnentafel data
  • index
  • margins
  • page numbers
  • single vs double side pages
  • type of binding

Many thanks for a well organized approach, this will help to put the data in the right sequence.

Family Tree Maker will do much the same process that George described for Roots Magic. I used an older version of FTM years ago to produce a book for my family. Now, it has many more features.
