안치삼 (Ahn Ch'i-sam, 安致三) was born in Kangso County, Pyeongan, Joseon (Korea), the third son of Ahn Kyon-jin (aka Ahn Heung-guk), and Hwang.
He later changed his name to 창호 (Chang-ho), and was also later known by his pen-name "도산" (Dosan).
Changho and Yi Hye Ryon (이혜련), aka Helen Lee, were married before they left Korea for the United States, where they arrived in October 1902. They were to be the first married couple to so emigrate.
Their children were all born in California.
On the 16th December 1924, Changho travelled on the Matsonia from Honolulu to San Francisco.[1]
On the 8th March 1926, Changho was aboard the SS Sonoma arriving in Honolulu, Hawaii, from San Francisco, California.[2]
On the 24th April 1930, the Ahn family was still living at 106 North Figueroa St, Los Angeles. Home at the time were Chang Ho Ahn (50), a History teacher in his own school, his wife: Helen (44); their children: 25-year-old Philip, working on his own account as a business owner of a fruit store; 17-year-old Philson; 15-year-old Susana (aka Susan); 12-year-old Sara (Soorah); and 3-year-old Ralph; and 29-year-old Choseph Choy, a lodger, driving a truck for a produce store (quite likely Philip Ahn's).[3]
Ahn Changho, aka An Chang-ho, aka Ahn Changho Dosan, died on the 10th March 1938, in the Keijō Imperial University Hospital , Gyeongseong (aka Keijō under the occupying Japanese), Japanese Korea, just four months after his 59th birthday, as a result of the privations endured whilst a prisoner of the Japanese.
