Toyoda Sakichi was born in the Fuchi District of Tōtōmi Province on 19 March 1867. His father was Toyoda Ikichi, a carpenter, and his mother was Mori Ei. He had two younger brothers, Heikichi and Sasuke, and a younger sister, Han; he was the eldest child.
As an inventor and businessman, Sakichi founded a group of businesses that became Toyota, a corporation known worldwide primarily as an automobile manufacturer.
Sakichi married Tami Sahara, his first wife, on 26 March 1893. They separated in January 1894, but had a son, Kiichirō. His second wife was Asako Hayashi; they married on 9 July 1897. Their daughter Aiko was born from that marriage.
Sakichi died in Nagoya on 30 October 1930.
