Fujita Tsuguharu was born in Tokyo on 27 November 1886, the son of Fujita Tsuguakira. During his early career as an artist, he signed his works as "Fujita", but later changed it to "Foujita."
Tsuguharu married at least five times during his lifetime. His first marriage was to Tokita Tomiko from 1912 to 1916, and then his second marriage to Fernande Barrey lasted from from 1917 to 1928, and he was with his third wife, Lucie Badoud, before Lucie met Robert Desnos. He was also with Madeleine Lequeux when they took trips to Brazil in the early 1930s. He married his fifth and final wife, Horiuchi Kimiyo, in 1936. None of Tsuguharu's marriages produced any children.
Tsuguharu is known for Book of Cats.[1] He also directed the construction of Foujita Chapel, and painted religious frescoes on its walls, in Reims, France from 1965 to 1966. It is now a historic monument since 1992.[2]
He converted to Catholicism in 1959 in Reims. He died in Zurich on 29 January 1968. He was ultimately buried on the grounds of Foujita Chapel in Reims.
Under the copyright laws of France and Japan, Tsuguharu's art works would enter the public domain in both areas on 1 January 2039. Meanwhile, all of his works would indisputably enter the public domain in the United States by 1 January 2064 (current as of 21 July 2023).
