Sakurai Masahiro was born in Musashimurayama, Tokyo on 3 August 1970. His parents are unknown. As a video game developer, he started working for HAL Laboratory, Inc. as early as 1989, when he created the character of Kirby. He directed the development of Kirby's Dream Land, which was released in Japan on 27 April 1992. Masahiro also directed the fighting games Super Smash Bros., which was released in Japan on 21 January 1999, and Super Smash Bros. Melee, which was released on 21 November 2001. He left HAL in 2003, ending his work on the Kirby video game series after 14 years, although the Kirby series continues in development by Nintendo and HAL as of 24 August 2022.
Two years after leaving HAL, Masahiro founded Sora, Ltd., which he continues leading as of 24 August 2022. While leading Sora, he directed the development of later video games in the Super Smash Bros. series, with Brawl being released in Japan on 31 January 2008. Besides his work on Super Smash Bros., he also directed the development of Kid Icarus: Uprising, which was released on 22 March 2012. After Kid Icarus: Uprising, Masahiro continued developing Super Smash Bros., with the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions of the game released in late 2014. His most recent video game is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which was released worldwide on 7 December 2018.
Masahiro is also a voice actor, portraying the role of King Dedede in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and the Super Smash Bros. series since 2000. Since 24 August 2022, he is a YouTuber, posting his videos regarding his thoughts on creating video games and reflecting on his role in the video game industry. He is currently married since June 2008.
