Joyce Chen 家艾 was born in 1917 in Beijing. She is best known for popularizing Chinese food in wider American culture. The city of Cambridge, Massachusetts continues to hold an annual "Festival of Dumplings" to celebrate her birthday.
In 1958, she opened her first restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1962, she published her first cookbook. In 1967, she starred in her own cooking television show on PBS. She created and sold several kitchen tools, most famously the flat-bottom stir-fry pan Peking Wok in 1970. By the 1980s, she had a franchise of Chinese cooking sauces and oils at supermarkets. She passed away in 1994. The US Postal Service issued a stamp in her honor in 2014.
