Abiko Motoo was born to a Buddhist family in Himi, Toyama-ken on 10 March 1934; his father served as a clergy in the Sōtō sect. He attended Toyama Prefectural Takaoka Kōgei High School and started writing manga in 1951 during his schooling. After his graduation, he worked at The Toyama Shimbun, a local newspaper company in Toyama-ken.
As a member of the duo Fujiko Fujio, Motoo, as Fujiko Fujio Ⓐ, collaborated with Fujimoto Hiroshi, also known as Fujiko F. Fujio, on Little Ghost Q-Taro. They also wrote several manga independently. In Motoo's case, he wrote Ninja Hattori, The Monster Kid, The Laughing Salesman, Childhood Days, Ultra B and Parasol Henbee among others. He died in Kawasaki, Kanagawa-ken on 7 April 2022.
The copyright on Motoo's works in Japan are managed by Fujiko Studio. All works by him, including any collaborations with Hiroshi, would enter the public domain in Japan on 1 January 2093 (current as of 7 April 2022).
