Biography

Notables Project
晋三 安倍 is Notable.

Abe Shinzō was born in Tōkyō-to on 21 September 1954, the second son of Abe Shintarō and Kishi Yōko. He graduated from Seikei University with a degree in political science in 1977. In the United States, he studied public policy at the University of Southern California. After returning to Japan, Shinzō worked for Kobe Steel from April 1979 to 1982. He would later serve in various positions in the Japanese government. He married in 1987, but does not have any children.

Starting on 19 July 1993, Shinzō served as a member of the House of Representatives from Yamaguchi-ken in the Diet. From September 2003 to September 2004, he was the Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). He later became the Chief Cabinet Secretary on 31 October 2005 under his predecessor, succeeding as prime minister of Japan on 20 September 2006. In doing so, he also became the president of the LDP. He resigned from both positions on 26 September 2007 due to health reasons.

Shinzō made a comeback to politics, and on 26 September 2012, he was elected president of the LDP once more. In the 2012 general elections, the LDP gained more seats in the Diet, and on 26 December, Shinzō returned to his office as prime minister, becoming the first since Yoshida Shigeru in 1948. He was re-elected in 2014 and again in 2017, and is now the longest-serving prime minister in the history of Japan. He resigned both his office of prime minister and his presidency of the LDP on 16 September 2020, again due to health concerns.

After his resignation, Shinzō remained active in politics as a member of the House of Representatives. On 8 July 2022, 11:31 JST, he was shot twice from behind while giving a campaign speech at a political event near Yamato-Saidaiji Station in Nara-shi, Nara-ken. He was transported by medical helicopter to Nara Medical University Hospital in Kashihara-shi, where he was pronounced dead at 17:03 JST.

After his death, Shinzō was awarded the title of Junior First Rank (ju ichi-i) by the government of Japan. A Buddhist funeral was held for him at Zōjō-ji in Tōkyō-to on 12 July 2022, immediately followed by a private funeral and cremation at Kirigaya Funeral Hall. His state funeral was held on 27 September. Shinzō's final resting place is unknown, but it is possible that his ashes are interred at Fuji Cemetery & Gardens at Oyama-chō, Suntō-gun, Shizuoka-ken or the Abe family cemetery at Yuya, Nagato-shi, Yamaguchi-ken.
