Yasuo (國吉) Kuniyoshi is Notable.

Born 国吉 康雄, Yasuo Kuniyoshi was born in Okayama, Japan on September 1, 1889. He migrated to the United States in 1906 after choosing not to attend military school in Japan. There, he studied at the Los Angeles School of Art and Design.

After spending three years in Los Angeles, Yasuo moved to New York City to pursue a career in art. After studying at the National Academy and then the Independent School in New York City, he studied under Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League of New York. He became an art teacher himself, teaching sudents like Nan Lurie, Irene Krugman and Anne Helioff.

Yasuo was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1935. Despite being labeled an "enemy alien" during World War II, he still retained his allegiance to the United States, as shown in his paintings.[1]

Yasuo passed away in New York City on May 14, 1953.
