In 1716, he fled to Austria but was lured back in 1718 with promises of mercy and that he would be allowed to marry his long-time mistress. He then arrested, and his friends and servants were tortured and murdered. Aleksey's mother was even brought out of the convent to which she had been exiled and put on trial for adultery.
Aleksey was sentenced to death for the crime of wishing his father, the Tsar, dead. He was viciously whipped, and two days later, died.
