Parentage: Uncertain. George Zsoka and Maria Szabo are a potential couple for István's parentage.
István Zsoka may possibly been born in the hamlet of Vendégi, which is now called Hosťovce, in Slovakia and in Hungarian, it was formerly called Bódavendégi.
A record was found for an István Zsoka, born 13 Jul 1775 in Vendégi, who appears to be the child of George Zsoka and Maria Szabo, listed from Vendégi. [1]. They may also not be his parents. [2][3] Assumptions are he that grew up in the area of Vendégi-Bodva and worked as a vineyard or tenant farmer.
Because Zsoka is a very old Magyar family name in this region,[4], speculation is that István Zsoka is a descendant from this native family. There were Catholic as well as Reformed Zsokas in the area. He may have also been born with a different surname and Zsoka is a by-name (or farm name). There is also the possibility that he was born illegitimate and Zsoka is his mother's surname.
His status in the records was always as "Al-Zseller, nemetelen- tenant farmer" which means he was a farm laborer, a day worker.
He married Maria Fabritzki. Fabriczsy, Fabritezsky, Fabrichze are variations of this surname which does not appear in the register of Vendégi area churches so his wife may be from one of the Greek Catholic or Ruthenian communities nearby. They had four children baptized in the Catholic church of Hidvég-Ardó. The godparents presented at their children's baptisms seem to be locals, or the local midwife, most likely not related.
István Zsoka died at about the age of 56 between 22 July-August 1831[5]. It seems that after István's death, his widow, Maria Fabriczy Zsoka, lived a very hard life as a tenant farm laborer with their daughter, Ersebet Zsoka. They lived in a room (aj-zseller), a worker's cabin, with other boarders. Mother and daughter died days apart from a fever due to epidemic disease, probably "Betegség". The cause of death was cholera, with maybe malnutrition and exhaustion.
There is a mixed-up marriage records sequence in Hidvég-Ardó Catholic Records from August 1796 to January 1st 1807. It's not a microfilm photograph page gap; It's the same priest's handwriting on the same page. N.-17 20:01, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
IMPORTANT to note that in 1797, a new preist named Joseph Gregorovyzky from Szogliget was installed as the parish preist. Preist changes in this time period. However, the baptisms have been recorded.
A Vendégi place study may be done for most inhabitants; check the census too.
