Joop Zoetemelk is a renowned former professional road racing cyclist.
Hendrik Gerardus Joseph Zoetemelk was born on 03 December 1946 at The Hague, Netherlands and was the son of Maria Cornelia (Overdevest) and Gerardus Joseph Zoetemelk.
He began cycling competitively in the late 1960s and quickly rose to prominence, showcasing his endurance and versatility.
In 1968 he won a gold medal in the team time trial at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City, marking his emergence on the international stage.Between 1970-1982 he finished second in the Tour de France six times and secured a victory in the 1980 edition.
Joop Zoetemelk married on 19 November 1971 to Françoise Duchaussoy (d: 2008). [1]
