Prior to coming to the US, Zio Giuseppe was a member of the local Carabiniere - the Italian national police force.

Giuseppe immigrated to the US on 4 Jul 1922 aboard the SS Colombo out of Genoa, Italy. He was destined for San Francisco and the home of his brother Carlo Zara. He listed his father's brother Francesco Zara as his hometown reference. He was a mason by trade and could read and write.

Virginia filed for a divorce in May of 1929 but Giuseppe died before the divorce was finalized.

At the time of his death Giuseppe was the co-owner of a sausage casing shop in San Francisco's Butchertown.

He passed away in 1930 and is buried in the Italian Cemetery in Colma, CA.
