Biography

Birth and Early Life

Ester was born about 1909, in Saskatchewan, Canada. She was the 4th known child born to Herman Zabel and Sophia Thierman.

A 1905 Minnesota State Census indicates her family lived in Orrock township, Sherburne, Minnesota before immigrating to Saskatchewan. (The census was taken 4 years before Esther was born, but the parents and birth order of the children help to identify the family in subsequent years). In 1905, "Herman, age 38, and Sophie Zabel, age 31" lived with their children "Bernard, age 6; Melvin, age 3, and Herman, age 1". Sophie and her 3 children were born in Minnesota. ^[1]

On June 20 1915, Ester's mother, Sophia Thierman Zabel , passed away (age 41–42) in Saskatchewan. She was buried at the North Webb Cemetery, Webb, Swift Current Census Division, Saskatchewan. ^[2]

In 1916, Ester Zabel, age 7, lived with her father, "Herman Zabel, age 55" widowed, and her siblings "Bunie, age 17; Melven, age 14; and Herman, age 12". They lived in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. ^[3]

Marriage and Children

Ester Clara Zabel was married to George Joseph Spooner on October 8, 1928 at Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. George was the son of Oral Spooner and Lillian Clukey. Together Ester and George had 6 known children:

In 1931, "Esther, age 22, and George Webb Spooner, age 22" lived with their children "Dearyl and Eleanor, age 1 month". They lived in the Town of Webb, Swift Current, Saskatchewan , where George was a farmer. ^[4] [Note: George's middle name is not Webb—it was indexed incorrectly using the town where George was living.]

In 1943, Ester's father, Herman Zabel passed away (age 70–71). He was buried in the Mount Pleasant Burial Park, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. ^[5]

On April 22, 1972, Ester's husband, George Joseph Spooner (age 63) passed away at New Westminster, Greater Vancouver Regional District, British Columbia. George was buried at the Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Cemetery, New Westminster, Greater Vancouver Regional District, British Columbia. ^[6]

Death and Burial

On August 20, 2001, Esther Clara Zabel Spooner (age 93), widowed, passed away at New Westminster, Greater Vancouver Regional District, British Columbia. Esther was buried at the Saint Peter's Roman Catholic Cemetery, New Westminster, Greater Vancouver Regional District, British Columbia. ^[7]
