Carl B. Yates, 31, of Hammond, Ind., a former resident of Chrisman and Metcalf communities, died Monday of heart attack while at work. He had been employed as a carpenter. He was born at Chrisman May 25, 1924, son of Harry E. and the late Jessie Laswell Yates. The deceased was graduated from Metcalf high school in 1943, and had always attended the Nazarene church. On Feb. 8, 1946, he was married to Luella Carpenter. He had been a resident of Hammond since 1951. Besides his wife and father, who reside at Metcalf, Mr. Yates is survived by two children, Ronald Eugene and Patricia Lynn; and the following brothers and sisters: Harry Eugene of Mishawaka, Ind., Fred of Chrisman, Roy of Kankakee, James of Metcalf, Mrs. Lucile Owens of Ogden. Utah. Mrs. Marjorie Ijams of Terre Haute, Mrs. Ruth Sanders of Griffith, Ind., and two step-brothers Leslie Wallace of Gary; Ind., and Dennis Wallace of Valparaiso, Ind. He was preceded in death by his mother and two sisters. Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2:00 p. m. at the Scott Funeral home with the Rev. Lena May Peters, pastor of Chrisman Nazarene church officiating. Burial will be at Woodland cemetery. Yates-709 21:37, 12 April 2012 (EDT)

May 25, 2012; on this date in 1924 my father Carl Bernell Yates was born in the Yates family home at 101 E Lincoln Ave, Chrisman, IL 61924. His was a short life dying at age 31 working hard to support his young wife and two children. He has been dead now 57 years, almost twice as long as he lived and is buried in Woodland Cemetery. It is a sweet memory when I reflect back now with a 9 year old child’s perspective. I get still get flashes of old memories and can place them in context. He set a good foundation for me and I would like to have known him as an adult. ^[5]
