Virgil Yates was a Missouri National Guardsman before WWII. He enlisted in WWII, graduated from OCS, entered the Medical Service Corps and served in Italy and Germany. He demobilized after the war and secured a MA in English so that he might teach in Bethany High School. He reactivated his Army service and eventually taught at the Armor Center in Louisville. Mark, his first son, was born there in 1950. Virgil served in Korea during the "Police Action." After serving in the combat zone, he was reassigned to the Army hospital in Japan. His wife, Janet, and son, Mark, joined him there. Reassigned to Fort Sam Huston, Texas, his second son, William was born there in 1954. From Texas, he was reassigned to Fort Riley, Kansas. From there, the family deployed to Germany for three years, including a period as a medical service Inspector General. Reassigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he became the Executive Officer for the post's hospital, and became the project officer for the construction of a new hospital. Retiring from the Army in 1964, the family moved to Jefferson City, Missouri. There, he became essentially the Inspector General for the Missouri state medical community. From there, he moved to Columbia, Missouri, where he was the director of the Ellis Fischel Cancer Hospital. Finally retiring, he and Janet moved to the retirement community in Bella Vista, Arkansas. Eventually he died there, during Operation Desert Shield, and was buried as noted above. His awards include the Legion of Merit and two Bronze Stars, one with Valor designation for his evacuation of patients from a burning hospital ship being straffed and bombed.
