Samuel Yates was born about 1791 in Pennsylvania, USA. ^{[1] [2] [3]}

In 1812 Samuel (age about 21) was living in Ohio, USA. He served as a Private with Capt. Isaac Butler's Company in the United States Army during the War of 1812 from 9 Aug to 9 Oct 1812. ^{[1] [2] [4]}

In the 1820 census Samuel (age about 29) was living in Plain City, Wayne, Ohio, USA. The household included 1 Male Under 10, 1 Male age 26-44, 3 Females Under age 10, and 1 Female age 26-44. ^[5]

In the 1830 census Samuel (age about 39) was living in Plain City, Wayne, Ohio, USA. The household included 1 Male Under age 5, 2 Males age 5-9, 1 Male age 10-14, 1 Male age 30-39, 1 Female Under age 5, 1 Female age 5-9, 1 Female age 10-14, and 1 Female age 30-39. ^[6]

The U.S. Find A Grave memorial says that Samuel was buried in Wooster Cemetery, Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio, ^[3] and the Ohio Find A Grave memorial shows him buried in Maize Cemetery, Wooster, Wayne, Ohio, USA, also known as Branch Cemetery,^[8] which is where the Ohio, U.S., Soldier Grave Registration card for Samuel Yates says that he was buried. ^[1]. These could all be the same cemetery.

Research Notes

Samuel Yates and Jane Yarnell may have been the parents of Sara Elizabeth Yates, who married Isaac Ogden. No definitive proof has yet been found of the connection to Sara, but the following evidence supports it.

Sara Yates was born about 1821-1822 in Ohio and was married (1845) in Wayne County, where she lived until sometime after 1850. A search of the 1820 and 1830 census for heads of household with the Yates surname in Wayne County, Ohio returns only 1 - Samuel Yates. ^{[5] [6]} In 1840, Samuel has 1 female in the correct age range (age 15-19) ^[7] , and there is one other (William Yates) who has a female in the correct age range in his household, ^[9] but William is not listed in Wayne County before or after 1840.

The 1820 Census shows Samuel Yates ^[5] in Plain, Wayne County, Ohio with Samuel Yarnell (age over 45) in the household next to Samuel Yates. ^[10]

The 1830 Census shows Samuel Yates in Plain, Wayne County, Ohio with Samuel Yarnell (age 60-70) ^[11] and Samuel Yarnell Jr. (age 30-40) ^[12] in the households on either side of his. This suggests that the Yarnells were connected to the Yates family. In 1840, the census shows Samuel Yarnell (the elder, age 70-80) ^[13] still in the household next to Samuel Yates.^[7]

Sara named her eldest son Samuel Yates Ogden.
