Francis (Franz), Duke of Teck, was an Austrian-born nobleman who married into the British royal family. He was the father of Queen Mary of Teck and thus the great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom.
Franz Paul Karl Ludwig Alexander Charles Louis, Count von Hohenstein, was born in 1837 in Hungary. He was the son of Alexander von Wurttemberg and Claudine Rhedey.
His mother Claudine Rhedey had been created Countess von Hohenstein by Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria in 1835.
Count Franz von Hohenstein was educated at the Imperial Austrian Academy of Engineers. He joined the Imperial Austrian Army as a lieutenant in 1854 and later became a captain (Rittmeister) in the 7th Hussars.
In 1863, he was created Prince of Teck in the Kingdom of Württemberg.
He served during the Austro-Prussian War (1866). He then retired from the Austrian Army and married Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, a granddaughter of George III of Great Btitain and Ireland, in Kew, Surrey, England (United Kingdom).
He was created Dule of Teck by King Charles I of Württemberg in 1871.
He passed away in 1900.
