The following research, found at the website below, suggests that Benjamin was married to two different women named Mary. The first, Mary Worley, died in 1813. The second, Mary Ellis, was married to Benjamin in 1818, thus accounting for any reports of Mary Hiatt dying after this date (i.e. 1832).

Clear Creek Mo. Mtg., Clinton Co., Ohio: 15-6mo-1818 - Benjamin Hiatt, son of Joseph and Hannah Highland Co., Ohio, married in East Fork Mtg. House, to Mary Ellis, d/o Nehemiah and Sarah, Clinton Co.

"Previous to the year 1810, Benjamin Hiatt, a native of North Carolina, came out from Virginia to Rainsborough and settled on the M.B. Park farm. With him he brought his son. Amaziah, ans 14 other children. On this farm Benjamin died, and many of his children went farther west. Amaziah remained in Paint (township -- editor)., and his sons, Ellis and Isaac Hiatt, are the only ones of the family remaining there. Henry Hiatt, living on Iowa; Hannah Jackson, in Clinton county; and Mourning Dewitt, in Brown county, are the sole surviving children of Benjamin."
