A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy Class of 1845, Wood was commissioned as a brevet second lieutenant in the Corps of Topographical Engineers on July 1, 1845. He subsequently was present as a member of Gen. Taylor's Army of the Occupation in Texas, then when hostilities commenced with Mexico, Wood participated in the battles of Palo Alto and Monterrey. After being transferred to the 2nd Regiment of Dragoons on October 19th and promoted to second lieutenant on December 2nd of 1846, Wood was present during the Battle of Buena Vista, where he was brevetted to first lieutenant for "gallant and meritorious conduct."[1]
