Biography

Henry James Woollard's birth was registered Oct-Nov-Dec 1892[1], and elsewhere noted as born on 1 October 1892 in Paddington, Middlesex, England to parents Harry John Thomas Woollard (1863-1931) and Maria [Elizabeth] Smith (1862- ). [2]. The 1911 England Census lists Henry James as being born in Paddington, 18 years of age, living in the Civil Parish of Acton in the County of Middlesex, Street address 30 Shakespeare Road, Acton, Middlesex, single, and a Tailor's Apprentice, living with his parents, elder sister Ethel Maria and younger sister Alice Emily[3]

Henry was likely awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal and the British Medal, issued in Australia[4]. Amongst the books which survived to the time of my purchase was a 1916 edition novel with the inscription "Henry.J.Woollard. "Manor House". Cowper Road. Acton. London.W."

Henry James is likely in Brisbane in 1917, working for Gore in Stanley Street East Brisbane where he is the contact for applications for stewards on a home boat[5].

Electoral rolls place Henry in Brisbane in 1922, at Knowles' on Logan Road Buranda, and Corner Main and Eighth Avenue Coorparoo, occupation Merchant Seaman/Seaman [6].

Henry marries Elizabeth Ellen Wynne of Albert Park on July 3, 1924 in the State of Victoria[7].

On 21 March 1925 Henry advertises for sale a nearly new, half-size billiard table, from the corner of Main and Eighth Avenue Coorparoo[8]. Henry James appears on the electoral roll for 1925 with the occupation of Seaman, living on the corner Main and Eighth Avenue Coorparoo[9]. On the 1929 electoral role and until his death his occupation is Marine Steward[10]. Henry is listed in Post Office Directories in Shakespeare Street in 1926, 1927 and 1930[11].

It is unlikely a coincidence that his permanent Brisbane home shares the same street name as his home in England and the Brisbane house name, Acton, also draws on his home locale.

In June, July and August 1944, likely without the overhead of mortgage repayments, Henry James advertises for

  • a good class bedroom suite (may have been in the house when I purchased) and music rolls in good condition, [12]
  • a good gas geyser in perfect condition, [13]
  • a good class lawnmower for which he will pay a good price, [14]
  • a 60 foot garden hose with fittings, [15]
  • and a good style Glass Chandelier [16]

In 1949 Henry seeks to urgently sell a 35mm sound projector complete with amplifier and speaker and 10,000 feet of film, in running condition. [17]

Henry James died on 13 March 1958[18].

Research Notes

G2G comment by grandaughter and research by Bruce McCallum including name on marriage certificate and on house mortgage document indicate the misspelling of surname at birth in this entry, should be Woollard.

Biographical information entered 17 February 2023 comes from research by the homeowner of their former Brisbane residence Acton.

I live in a house in the suburb of Coorparoo, Queensland, Australia, originally owned by Henry James Woollard and Elizabeth (Wynne) Woollard. Their surviving children were joint owners when I purchased in 1981: Henry Clifford Woollard of North Geelong, Victoria (Australia) and Dulcie Elizabeth (Woollard) Muller of London. The title was registered to Henry and Elizabeth on 26 Nov 1925. <ref> Original Certificate of Title Queensland No. 300600 Register Book, Vol 1642 Folio 90</ref> I wonder if this record (wollard-9) has a mis-spelt surname and is the Henry who owned my house? I believe my Henry died on 13 March 1958 <ref> BDM 1958/B/24701</ref> and Elizabeth died on 21 Sep 1974 <ref> BDM 1974/B/54484</ref>. These dates correlate with those on the land title. I located TROVE search results of newspaper notices lodged by Henry and of a competition entered by Dulcie. Based on a birthday wish notice, it appears Henry Clifford was in the RAAF and he has a brief services record online. Further information on space page Space:House%2C_Coorparoo%2C_Queensland
