Biography

Johannes Wister (born: Wüstar) was born in Neckargemünd, Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He was baptized in the Reformed church[1]

Immigrated to America (Philadelphia) in 1727, when he was 19 years old. [2]He brought with him merchandise from the Neckar valley, provided to him by Georg Friederich Hölzer, the European agent and partner of his older brother Conrad.[3]

In America, Johannes used Wister as his surname, unlike his older brother Caspar, who used Wistar.

He was a shopkeeper in Philadelphia, with a commercial network operating in the back country of Pennsylvania. Johannes Wister provided an informal postal network for German immigrants living in the back country[4]

IN 1731, he purchased a store in Philadelphia on what is now Market St.

In 1744, he purchased a tract in the Schuylkill Valley at Germantown and built a large home, which was later affectionately named Grumblethorpe from the Edward Nares' 1811 book "Think's I To Myself". The home is currently listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

He married 3 times:

  • (1) Salome Zimmerman 1731 at Philadelphia;
  • (2) Anna Catharina Rubinkam 1737; 3 children
  • (3) Anna Thoman 1771.

Research Notes

The Palatine Ship WILLIAM AND SARAH (William Hill, Master from Rotterda) to Philadelphia 18th Sept. 1727. The ships list includes a single man John Wester (sick). Is this Johannes Wüster?

Following the death of his brother Caspar, Johannes owed his brother's estate £2000 in bills and bonds.[5]

Sally Wister, a granddaughter of Johannes Wister, was born in her grandfather's house in Philadelphia. Sally wrote a Journal about her experiences during the American Revolutionary War.

Rosalind Beiler's book (mentioned in the previous comment) does not mention John Wüster born in 1700. Possibly this profile should be merged with Wistar-31? However, the wives are different in the two profiles, and no sources are provided in Wistar-30 to discern if the two profiles represent the same person. Agree with suggestions about family name in previous comment.

Hello, his LNAB should be changed to Wüster, and his name was spelled WistEr (as opposed to his brother Caspar WistAr) in Philadelphia. A book with a great amount of detailed research on this family is Rosalind Beiler's "Immigrant and Entrepreneur: The Atlantic World of Caspar Wistar, 1650-1750."

His LNAB should be Wüster. The maiden name of his first wife (not his mother) was Zimmerman. In Philadelphia, he went by the name Wister, while his brother Caspar went by WistAr.
