Biography

Hannah (Wing) Poyas is a part of US Black heritage.

FUNERAL NOTICE — "The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Poyas, Sr., and of her children, are respectfully invited to attend the funeral obsequies of the latter at her residence, 133 Columbus St., this afternoon at half-past 3 o'clock." (The News and Courier, Charleston, S.C., 27 Oct. 1886, p. 8, col. 5.)

IN MEMORIAM — "POYAS — Departed this life Oct. 26, 1886, after a protracted illness, Mrs. Hannah Poyas, in the 51st year of her age. One year ago today the Reaper Death entered our home, and we were called to consign to the tomb our devoted mother. Kind and affectionate, she was beloved by all who knew her. Though an invalid for several years, yet she bore her affliction with Christian fortitude, and would always say, 'Father, thy will be done!' Death has indeed left an aching void which time can never fill. Though we will never see her smiling face on earth no more [sic], there is a sweet consolation: we can go to her and there be reunited in that land where all is light and love, where Jesus has promised to take the robe of His righteousness to wipe the tears from our eyes. Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe from corroding care, safe from the world's temptation, sin cannot harm her there. — Her Children."
