Joseph was born about 1752, possibly in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was the son of Edward Wing and Rebecca (Cornell) Wing.

He married Mary Potter on 21 Feb 1782 at Dartmouth (now Westport), Bristol, Massachusetts She was born 1750 and died 1839.
