Biography

This profile represents the Robert Wing listed in Anderson's "Great Migration" as an early immigrant to Boston.[1] Data in this profile comes from "Great Migration" (which lists it's own primary sources) unless otherwise noted.

Birth & Baptism

Robert Wing was born in England about 1574 (aged 60, April 1634 on the Francis)[2]

He was possibly from near Lawford, Essex. Lechford in his Notebook mentions that "Robert Wing of Boston prays to me to speak or send to his cousin Wing of Lomford dwelling in the Lady's place, by Dedham for to send him something [Lechford 432]. Lomford by Dedham is the parish of Lawford, Essex. Two wills were recorded for residents of Lawford with the name Wing: William Wing in 1663 and Abraham Wing in 1667.[3]

Immigration

Robert immigrated from England in 1634 on the "Francis" from Ipswich to Boston, Masachusetts Bay Colony. On 30 April 1634 he was enrolled as a passenger as "Robert Winge" aged 60, along with his wife Judith aged 43. [2]

Colonial Life

Admitted to Boston Church "Robert Wing, laborer" on 8 October 1642. [BChr 36] Boston records including his mark witnessing a document (12 January 1647/48) [Aspinwall 323] and signing a deed as a grantor (18 May 1638). [BBoP 19] He received various land grants in and around Boston and Muddy River.

Marriage

Robert's first known wife was Judith ________ who he married by 1634 when they enrolled as passengers on the Francis. Anderson notes that there was a marriage license issued by the Archdeaconry of Suffolk 15 February 1633/4 for Robert Winge, widower and Judith Doe of East Berghold to be married at Great Wenham.[4] Given their age differences, it would not be surprising if Robert had a wife before Judith. Judith died by 1637

By 1637 Robert had remarried to Joan _________ (Johanna in some records). Their first child John was born 22 July 1637, and all Robert's children recorded in Boston were by Joan.

Children

Robert was known to have 6 children born in Boston although only 4 were still alive at his death in 1651.

  1. John born 22 July 1637, baptized 16 October 1642" at the age of about 5 and a quarter years",[5] m. by 1660 Joshabeth Davis (based on the 14 Aug 1660 baptism of their first known child in Boston)
  2. Hannah born 14 February 1639/40, baptized also 16 October 1642 "being about 2 years and 8 months old"[6]
  3. Jacob born 31 Jul 1642, baptized also 16 October 1642 "being about 9 weeks old"[7]
  4. Elizabeth born about 28 July 1644, bp 4 August 1644 "being about 8 days old",[8] m1 3 Apr 1661 John Walley m2 20 Apr 1710 Thomas Walker
  5. Joseph born 13 October 1646, baptized 1 November 1646 "being about 6 days old",[9] m. 1673 Joanna ________
  6. Benjamin baptized 18 February 1648/49 "about 7 days old"[10]

Death & Estate

On 21 November 1651 Thomas Walker and Elizabeth Baker testified that they had been summoned by Robert on his deathbed to hear his will spoken (nuncupative) and that he died 3 days later. Unfortunately the record did not state his actual death date. 3 December 1651 the court ordered that "Johanna" be responsible to her four children by Robert for £20 to the oldest child and £10 to the other three when they come of age.[11]

Research notes

Birthplace previously given as Kent, England. There were Wings in Kent, but other possibilities exist.

A previous version of this profile interpreted the court order regarding payments to the children as if the "when they come of age" only applied to the three youngest children, rather than all the children. Anderson interprets it to apply to all the children, and so the profile has been amended.

Great Migration gives Robert's death date as 24 November 1651, which seems to be an error, misinterpretting the date when the court testimony was given, with the actual date Thomas Walker and Elizabeth Baker were witness to Robert Wing's nuncupative will. The text of the court record reads "deposed before the county court 21 9mo 1651."[11]

I don't think that the wording of the court order means that the eldest child was of age. I think the amounts were distinguished between eldest and the others, all to be be paid out when they were of age.
