Biography

"Azarias Winchell of Shokan was born in the town of Olive in 1842. He attended the schools of his native place, and engaged in farming until twenty-two years of age, when he learned the carpenter and wagon maker's trade, in which he continued until 1879. He then engaged in general merchandising and purchased his present store at Shokan in 1887, which he has greatly enlarged and improved. His son, Elwyn, has been associated with him in business for many years. Politically, Mr Winchell is a Republican and served as Postmaster of Shokan under President Harrison. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias and the I.O.O.F.
He was married in 1861 to Miss Emeline Terwilliger, by whom his son, Elwyn, was born. The mother died in 1879. Mr Winchell's second wife was Mrs. Celia Schutt. Jacob Winchell, father of our subject, was born at Olive in 1797. He was a farmer and old-school Baptist preacher and was the eldest son of Peter Winchell, who was the first of this family born in Ulster County. The ancestry of this family dates to Robert Winchell, who was born in England and came to America in 1634."[1]

Winchell Reunion (1910)

"A very remarkabie family reunion occured at tha home of Jonathan Van Winchell in the town of Olive Saturday, September 24, 1910. The seven surviving sons and daughters of Jacob Winchell were the center of interest. The oldest is Jonathan Winchell aged 89 years. Then Rebecca Perry, Charlotte Markle, Delilah Bush, Phebe Everett, William Winchell and Azarias Winchell. The combined sum of their ages is 533 years, and their average age is 76-77 years. Twenty-three members of the Jacob Winchell family were present and the Rev. and Mrs. C.G. Gorse of Shokan especially invited guests. A very substantial dinner, a fair sample of Winchell cookery, consisting of roast beef, chicken, vegetables, pie, ice cream, and cake were served and received due justice from all. The brothers and sisters had their pictures taken in a group by Mrs. Gorse, as did also the whole company. The affair was a most delightful one. No one enjoyed it more than did Jonathan Winchell, the eldest brother in this remarkable family, who is well preserved for a man of his years. [4]
