Biography

Birth

Benammi Wilson served for Ohio in the War of 1812
Service started: Aug 1812
Unit(s): Trimble's Mounted Militia
Service ended: Sep 1813

Benammi was born in 1785 in York County, Pennsylvania, his parents were John and Rebecca Wilson.[1][2][3]

Marriage

Benammi was married to Clarissa Hall on 20 February 1811 in Lewis County, Kentucky.[4]

War of 1812

Soon after his marriage, Benammi enlisted in the militia at the outbreak of the War of 1812. He served in the company of Captain Thomas Lewis, Allen Trimble's Regiment of mounted militia (cavalry). The Regiment was based from West Union, Adams County, Ohio. He served from 30 August 1812 until 30 November 1812. He served again the next year in 1813 from 29 July to 8 September in Captain John Jones' company.[3][5] There is also a record that Benammi was a member of Key's Regiment, Ohio Militia.[6]

Benammi was said to be a surgeon's assistant but no records exist to support this; the records show his rank as a private.[3] After the war, Clarissa was paid a veteran widow's pension. The pension card refers to his service in both Captain Thomas Lewis' company and in the company of Captain John Jones.[5]

Children

Benammi and Clarissa were the parents of:

i. Jane (Wilson) Stanfield, b. 22 Dec 1811, Maysville, Mason, KY, d. 13 Feb 1913, Topeka, Shawnee, KS.[7][8]
ii. Susannah Alice (Wilson) George, b. 2 February 1814 in Chilicothe, Ohio, m. William S. George, Dec. 1834 in Highland County, Ohio.[9]
iii. Clarissa M. Wilson, b. 18 Feb 1816[2] d. aft. 1860.
iv. Alfred Milton Wilson, b. 3 Dec 1818 in Maysville, Mason, KY, m. Julia A. Summers,[3]
v. Maryan Wilson, b. 16 Feb 1821, assumed to have died young[3]
vi. Elizabeth F. (Wilson) Williams, Cope, b. 22 Sep 1823, m. Levi Williams, 2nd, C. Cope[3]
vii. Ebenezer F. Wilson, b. 23 Mar 1826, m. Elizabeth Gullett[2][3][10]
viii. William T. Wilson, 15 May 1828, m. Sarah F. Hosea[3][11]
ix. Benammi D. Wilson, 6 Jul 1830, m. Mary Hosea, 2nd, Eliza Douthitt[3][12]

Vocation

On the 1860 census, Benammi is listed as a farmer; it is also indicated that he cannot read and write.[2] Some family oral histories have passed that Benammi was a surgeon's helper during his time in the militia.[3] Today we might ascribe a title to this role as a medic or nurse. He was also known to have carpentry skills:

In ca 1813/4, he [and his family] migrated to Chillicothe, Ohio where he worked as a carpenter and helped build up the town.[3]

Name

The name "Benammi" is unique and has been helpful in finding records for this family. Several of Benammi and Clarissa's descendants carry the given name Benammi. On the 1860 census, he is listed as "Benjamin."[2] Most early documents list him as Benammi; e do not know if he used Benjamin interchangeably with Benammi or if the census-taker assumed that Benammi was a nickname and wrote down Benjamin. It is possible that his name was Benjamin and that he was called Benammi to differentiate him from his father but this is purely speculative. Further research into his name and parental origins is warranted.
