Bertha Ellen Willis was born in 1861 in Colac, Victoria (Australia). She was the only daughter (with five brothers) of Richard Willis and Ellen Norman. [1] The family was living in Steiglitz, 100 kilometres west of Melbourne, in 1870 and soon after settled in Collingwood, in Melbourne's inner suburbs.
Bertha married James Jenkins in 1886 in Victoria (Australia). [2] Living in Ararat, western Victoria, until about the turn of the century, the family moved into Melbourne's suburbs, settling in Ivanhoe. They had six sons and a daughter:
Three of Bertha's sons – Elvas, Frank and Spencer – served in the First World War, with her eldest being killed in action in France.

Bertha passed away on 28th September 1940 in Toorak, Victoria [3] and is buried in Brighton General Cemetery, Caulfield. [4]
