Biography

Flag of Cornwall (St Piran's Cross, pre-1838)
Jane (Williams) Fradd was born in Cornwall, England.

Jane was baptised on 22nd July 1799 in St Mawgan in Pydar, a picturesque sea-board parish halfway down the northern coast of Cornwall. She was one of eight known children of Thomas Williams, a carpenter, and his wife Mary Braben.[1]

On 25th October 1823, Jane married 24 year old Philip Share at Ruan Lanihorne. Both parties signed their names, with James Harvey and Thomas Williams witnessing the event.[2]

Tragically, less than one year later, Philip was laid to rest in St Gluvias on 14th October 1824,[3] the same day as their daughter, Philippa, was baptised.[4]

Following her husband's death, Jane returned to the parish of her birth with her young daughter, where she eventually remarried to John Fradd. Their nuptials were witnessed by Charles Williams and William Fradd.[5] Jane gave birth to five more children in this place, while John plied his trade as a carpenter and blacksmith, in workshops owned by his father-in-law Thomas Williams.[6] Thomas built the first Wesleyan chapel in the Churchtown, in 1830 at Mawgan Cross.[7] Jane and her sisters, Honour, Mary and Grace, each inherited a quarter share of the chapel upon the death of their father in 1837.[6]

The Fradd household was also home for a time to various relatives, including Jane's mother, Mary,[8] and her brother Thomas,[9] as well as apprentices who served with John Fradd. Jane's first cousin, Richard Brabyn, was one such apprentice.[8] Her son-in-law, Thomas (Henry) Broad was another.[10]

Susan, Jane and John's second daughter, died from consumption in 1841, at only eight years of age.[11] Their third daughter Mary also died from consumption, aged eight, in 1844.[12]

Jane had little time to enjoy the company of her grandchildren. Her eldest daughter Philippa married Henry Thorn.[13] The last record found for this couple is the baptism of their daughter Jane in 1846.[14] It is likely that they emigrated to a location as yet unknown.

Jane and John's eldest daughter Elizabeth emigrated to South Australia with her husband Thomas (Henry) Broad and two children in 1851,[15] with John the younger joining them in 1857.[16] The remaining son, William, became a sailor and in 1868 he jumped ship at Port Adelaide, South Australia to be reunited with his siblings.[17]

On 4th February 1869, Jane's life came to a tragic end when she suffered a seizure and fell into a fire, sustaining severe burns that resulted in her death.[18] The Coroner investigating her demise delivered a finding of "accidentally burnt".[19] She was laid to rest in the Mawgan parish churchyard two days later.[20]

Following Jane's death her widower, John, emigrated to South Australia on 1 September 1869 on board the Orient, to spend the rest of his days with his children.[21]
