Biography

Mary (Williams) Norris was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

MARY NORRIS (nee WILLIAMS): born circa 1778.

Parents: John Williams and Elizabeth Williams (born Jones)

Mary was convicted in Co. Somerset Dec 1800 Summer Assizes accused of "stealing on the 18th August instant at the Parish of Stone Easton 3 muslin handkerchiefs and other goods val. 13/-...1 muslin handkerchiefs and or goods val. 11/- ..... and three check aprons val. 3/-...(The three lists were from three different owners Elizabeth Ann Cox - widow, Hester Catterson and Frances Mounterey spinsters.?? poss. at a church fete or event.) Mary's misdemeanour resulted in a sentance of seven years transportation "beyond the seas". Mary sailed on the "Nile" from Spithead (Portsmouth) on the 20th June 1801, arriving in the infant colony on the 14th December 1801. The "Nile" arrived with a full complement of ninety six female convicts. (Her name in ship's log is bracketed with a Hannah Whiddick.

  • Widow for 11 years after Richard's death in 1843.

18 Feb 1848: Conditional Baptism at St Matthews Catholic Church, Windsor, NSW. Dr. Day saw Mary the day before her death after an (??) illness of two weeks duration.

Headstone Inscription In Memory of Mary Norris who Departed this Life January 26 1863 Aged 85 yrs "Weep not for me Children Dear I am not dead but sleeping here My debt is paid, my grave you see Prepare yourself to follow me" Her burial occurred 28 Jan 1863 in the Windsor Catholic Cemetery, Row 2 Plot 3.
