Biography

Birth

  • Born April 7, 1950 in New Haven Connecticut.
    • Father was working on PHD in Math at Yale.
  • Moved to Amherst Massachusetts in 1953.
    • Father was Math professor at Amherst College.

Education

  • Senior year in High School was actually at Katedralskolan in Uppsala, Sweden, where father was on sabbatical.
  • AB in Math from Oberlin College, 1972.
  • MS in Computer Science from University of Illinois In Urbana 1977.
    • Research assistantship included work on ARPANET, the prototype of the Internet.
    • Humorous story: At one point the team was going to start a project using a new operating system (Unix[TM]) and a new computer language called C. A staff of highly opinionated software geeks could not agree on correct formatting of the language source; where to put spaces around operators, what to indent and how much, that kind of thing. After a full week where *all* we did was argue about this, I decided we just needed a program that would reformat a programs source however an individual wanted it. So I spent a week writing a C program to do that. The result, called "indent," after much evolution since, is now a part of the standard Linux distribution.

Work Life

  • 45 years (post graduation) in the software industry, mainly Motorola and Yahoo. Projects ranged from embedded systems (pre-smart mobile phones), to operating systems, to big-data processing on thousands of servers.

Fun Times

  • Served for many years as a Boy Scout troop and pack leader.
  • Served as advisor for six Philmont expeditions.

I see no reason why Sarah Starr nee Pratt would have a middle name of McLean or similar. Her entry in the Pratt book I just uploaded (its very hard to read which is why it seems nobody has gone through transcribing the book into the website like I did this past week) shows no middle name.
  • However. The book was compiled for the younger generations (I guess younger here is relative) by the author mailing letters to Pratts whose addresses could be ascertained from other relatives or city directories of the time. Not all wrote back, some wrote back with partial information. Some whose information was supplied by brothers/cousins/aunts/uncles who didn't provide everything requested or got some of it slightly off. So I wouldn't rule out a middle name existing that didn't make it into the book.

I haven't done a ton of looking into the Pratt family beyond whats in the book. The book had a supplement I have a pdf for as well but haven't read much since my line was barely mentioned in the first volume and not expanded upon in the supplement.

Hi, David,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.
