James H. Willard, aged seventy-four years, and a prominent and respeccted resident of Washington township, died Saturday at his home at Mill Grove after an illness of many months, Funeral services were held Monday at the Union church, conducted by Rev. D. F. Harrison, pastor of the Prinston M. E. Church, after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the nearby cemetery. James Harland Willard was a native of Indiana and was born August 16, 1836. Before attaining his majority he emigrated to Sullivan county, Tennessee, and on April 20, 1856, was married to Miss Sarah M. Whaley, of that county. To this union were born thirteen children, three died in infancy, of which ten survive him together with the grief stricken wife and mother. The living children are:
Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Willard emigrated to Mercer county and settled on the farm south of Princeton where they resided until two years ago when Mr. Willard was stricken with blindness. Following this affliction the farm was sold and the aged people took up their residence at Mill Grove. Mr. Willard was one of the oldest of Mercer county's teachers, having taught in the common schools of this county for more than thirty years. He was county school commissioner in the early seventies and always took a great interest in educational matters. He ws a member of the M. E. Church and an honest, upright christian gentleman who enjoyed the confidence and respect of his fellowmen. Hosts of friends will learn of his passing with deep regret and the hearts of all go out in sympathy to his bereft wife and children in their great sorrow.[10]
