James was born about 1844 and was baptised on 13 October 1844 at Saint Dunstan and All Saints Church, Stepney, London.[1] He was the son of James Thomas Wellington Wilkin and Georgina Trussell.
He emigrated to New Zealand, with his parents and two brothers, on the Travancore arriving at Lyttelton on 31 March 1851.[2]
He joined the staff of the Lyttleton Times in 1856/7 , eventually becoming manager of the Lyttleton Times Company.
He married Mary Grey in Lyttelton in 1870.[3] They went on to have 11 children.
While on a trip back to Europe with his wife and two daughters he passed away Paris, France, following an operation.[4] He is remembered at Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch.[5]
