Daughter of Lauchlan Wilkie and Margaret nee Forest of Mussellburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.

John and Elizabeth, with six of their 10 children, migrated to Australia on 4 July 1838 aboard the vessel "St. George", arriving in Port Jackson, on 15 November 1838.
