Biography

Sampson Wilder was born about 1780, possibly in North Carolina.

Sampson appears in the 1820 Federal census in Whitley county, Kentucky.[1]

Sampson appears in the 1840 Federal census in Jackson County, Alabama. Sampson's household appears as follows: 1 male age 10 thru 14; 1 male age 60 thru 69; 2 females ages 5 thru 9; 1 female age 10 thru 14; 1 female age 30 thru 39; and 1 female age 50 thru 59.[2]

Sampson died the 14th of July, 1851, in Lafayette county, Mississippi. Sampson's obituary appeared in the Tennessee Baptist as follows: "Sampson Wilder - Died in Lafayette county, Miss., on the 14th ult., Mr. Sampson Wilder, age 71 years. Father Wilder was a faithful member of the Primitive Baptist Church, was universally loved by all who knew him, as a brother, a neighbor or a friend. He gave all who saw him while sick the most clear and satisfactory evidence of his acceptance with God. He has left behind many relatives and friends to mourn his departure but let them receive consolation from the promises of the Bible: "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, from henceforth, yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them." New Union Miss."[3]
