Disputed Origins

Some have claimed he was the son of John Wilcox and Mary Farnsworth, but a 1993 article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register (cited below) published the parish records that document Edward's family origins, his two marriages, and his children.

Biography

Edward Wilcox was baptized February 12, 1603/4 at South Elkington, Linconshire, England, as the son of "Danyell Wylcock".[1]

He married first Mary __, who died in childbirth and was buried June 27, 1630, at Croft, Linconshire, England, Their son, Daniel, born in 1630 was buried in September, 1630 in Croft as well.[1]

Edward married second Susanna Thompson May 12, 1631, at Orby, Linconshire, England. Edward and Susanna had two known children, both baptized at Croft, LIncolnshire, England:[1]

  1. Daniel, christened March 4, 1632/3
  2. Stephen, baptized December 26, 1634

Edward died sometime after May 20, 1638, when he was listed as an inhabitant of Portsmouth, Rhode Island.[2] He was certainly deceased by April 13, 1660, when Daniel sold land that had belonged "to my father, Edward Wilcox".[1]

Edward Wilcox, immigrant ancestor, was one of the free inhabitants of the island Aquidneck, now Rhode Island, in 1638, and joined in founding the compact of government in May 28 of that year. About the same time he had a trading house in Narragansett in company with Roger Williams. Sometime after they took into their business Richard Smith Sr., formerly from Gloucestershire, England, later of Taunton, Massachusetts. Edward Wilcox died probably at Narragansett before 1648, and in 1653, the above-mentioned Smith appears to have acted as guardian for eight children, supposed to have been those of Wilcox. Children: Stephen, mentioned below; Daniel, married November 28, 1661 Elizabeth, daughter of John and Sarah (Warren) Cook. Doubtless others.

re: Kathleen Lester comment

I have done considerable in-depth research on Edward1 Wilcox of Portsmouth, RI and Lincolnshire, England... and have dug into the early trading post information regarding Roger Williams, Richard Smith, and _____ Wilcox (could be either or both- Edward Wilcox and John Wilcox [who left a trail in New Netherland records]). The letter from Ms. Lester's great aunt could be a very helpful addition to what is known about these two Wilcox men in the 1638-1660 time frame.

I have a letter written by a great aunt that tells the story of her g-g-grandfather Edward Wilcox and how he was a trader with Smith and Williams. I descend from this line. Would love to share if anyone is interested.

Wilcox-4486 and Wilcox-462 are not ready to be merged because: There is over one hundred miles between the two purported birthplaces. I would like to see this cleared up before they are merged. It is possible that the profile I created, which does not have documentation, is not correct, or even that this person has been confused with another person of the same name.

Any ideas? Thanks

I have found nothing indicating that John was Edwards father, I have found two instances where it shows a Daniel Wilcox and Isabel (Esabell) Unkown as the parents, although the birth and death dates indicate a missing generation between Edward and Daniel, this indicates to me it is possible that John is the father.
Wilcox-1269 and Wilcox-462 appear to represent the same person because: please use info in Wilcox-462
