Sylvester was born 15 Sep 1844 in Clyde, Wayne, New York, United States.^[1] His parents were Philo Widrig (1821-1896) and Sally Burt Widrig (1822-1890).^[2][3]

Sylvester, age 18, enlisted in the Union Army as a Private in Company G, 8th Regiment, Michigan Cavalry on 2 Dec 1862 at Ray, for 3 years. Mustered 3 Feb 1863. Take prisoner at Cleveland, Tennessee 18 Sep 1863. Transferred to Company L, 20 Jul 1865. Mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee 22 Sep 1865.^[4][5][1] The 8th Michigan Cavalry was organized at Mt. Clemens, Michigan between 30 Dec 1862 and 2 May 1863. During his service the Regiment was engaged in the key battles of Buffington Island and Nashville.^[6]

He was married at least 2 times. First to Anna/Ann Marriott and then to Marion Reish (1867-1929) (Reish is her maiden name, she was married before Sylvester). He married Anna in about 1865.^[7] He married Marion on 2 Sep 1902 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan.^[8]

Sylvester was admitted to the United States National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Sawtelle, California on 4 Oct 1828. He was suffering from gastro problems and senility. His wife was Marion.^[9]

Sylvester was a member of the G.A.R. in Republic, Michigan^[10] and Pasadena, California.

He passed away 13 Jun 1934 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, United States^[1] and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.^[2][3]

Research Notes

There appears to be a 3rd wife named Emma who appears on his death certificate. He lived with Emma Davis in 1930. Perhaps she became his wife before he died in 1934?
