Jonathan Whitten was born about 1761 in Virginia. He was the son of Charles Whitten and Nancy Smith.
About 1781, in Amherst County, Virginia, USA, he married Elizabeth (Margaret) Mehone. [1]
The couple lived in Pickens District, South Carolina, and had 4 known children:
Jonathan Whitten was an American Patriot and served the American cause during the War of American Independence: 1776-1783. He died on 25 February 1839 in Pickens District, South Carolina, USA. His death information is confirmed by his American Revolutionary War Pension Records. [2][3]
"His wife's name was Elizabeth Mahone, born in about 1760 and they married about 1781. They had four children, three daughters and one son. Sarah, 1782-1850, FNU (Elizabeth) Whitten, 1784-1845, Margaret "Peggy", 1789-1857 and Charles, 1795-1839. The names of the children are all listed in a lawsuit filed after Jonathan died intestate and I guess there was some disputing going on. FNU (Elizabeth) Whitten had married Aaron Whitten and she died before the estate was settled so her share was to go to her minor children. Charles also had passed away and his share was to go to his minor daughter."[4]
"I had also come to the conclusion that Jonathan was the son of Charles and Nancy Smith Whitten, but do not have any written back up. Do you have anything to prove this fact? Another researcher thinks he was the son of Robert Elijah Ambrose Whitten. I tried to connect him there but it just didn't seem to fit."
