Biography

Massachusetts state seal
Thomas Whitten was born in Massachusetts.

Birth and Parents

Thomas, the third of sixteen children of Elisha Whitten and Elizabeth Jeffers was born on 29 March 1808 at Scarborough, Massachusetts, which was annexed to Maine in 1820.[1]

Marriage and Children

Thomas married Mary Burnham (1806-1874) on 26 February 1835 at Scarborough, Cumberland, Maine.[2][3]Their intention to marry occurred on 8 October 1834 at Scarborough.[4]They had six children born at Buxton, Maine:

  1. Sarah Adaline Whitten (b. 18 Mar 1836; d. 1874)[5]m. 24 Dec 1864 at Buxton, ME, Humphrey Pike Richards (1836-1899)[6]
  2. Ebenezer B. Whitten (b. 4 May 1837; d. 9 Aug 1862, Buxton, ME)[7][8]m. 24 Oct 1857 at Lowell, MA, Frances Ann Leach (1839-1873)[9]
  3. Benjamin Franklin Whitten (b. 14 Dec 1838; d. 17 Jun 1864, Buxton, ME)[10][11]m.
  4. Mary Elizabeth Whitten (b. 24 May 1840; d. 12 Jan 1856, Buxton, ME)[12][13]
  5. Harriet E. Whitten (b. 20 Apr 1842; d. 13 Dec 1872, Buxton, ME)[14][15]m. 14 Apr 1861 at Westbrook, ME, Edwin R. Libby (1831-1913)
  6. Abbie Ann Whitten (b. 15 May 1845; d. 17 Jun 1907, Chelsea, MA)[16][17]m. 2 Jan 1869 at Buxton, ME, Seth Freeman Chaney Sawyer (1843-1916)

Mary (Burnham) Whitten died in 1874.[18]

Death and Burial

Thomas Whitten died on 29 May 1879 in his 71st year at Buxton.[19][20]He is buried in South Buxton Cemetery at Buxton, York, Maine.[21]

Research Notes

  • Several of the following notes are made by Chris Whitten 13:24, 17 July 2020 (UTC), unless otherwise noted. Chris wrote, "This Thomas Whitten is not a known relation but I'm trying to figure out who his parents were."
  • Several of Chris Whitten's (CW) notes have been revised/deleted based on sources added to the profile that support birth, marriage date, children, death and burial.
The parents for this profile have been identified since the profile was first written.
(CW) About three Thomas Whittens are shown as enlisted during the war of 1812. See Thomas Whitten (abt.1790-) for notes on these. The above Thomas Whitten is not one of them.
(CW) Ours is not the Thomas I. or J. Whitten (Whitten-1221) who appears in the census in Saco, married to Hepsabeth with daughters including Sarah J., Narcissa, Lydia and Irene. He was born about the same time in Maine, but has a different wife and children. This Thomas J. Whitten is conflated on Ancestry with the above Thomas Whitten's parents.
(CW) In 1870, Thomas and Mary appear with completely different Whittens in their household, and the birth year estimates are off by a couple years. Who are the other family members in 1870?
  • RESPONSE: The 1870 Census suggests that younger brother Jacob (55 years, b. ME, occupation Drives Ox Team) and his wife Eunice (43 years, b. ME, occupation Keeping House) are residing with Thomas and Mary. The remaining members are too young to be siblings, but could be children of Jacob and Eunice, or grandchildren of Thomas and Mary including Aaron W. (23 years, b. ME, occupation Works on Farm), Eli E. (20 years, occupation Works on Farm), Lucy A. (19 years, b. me), Mercy (16 years, b. ME, occupation Domestic Servant), Elizabeth (14 years, b. ME, Domestic Servant), Charles (11 years, b. ME, Attends School) and Jennie (8 years, b. ME, Attends School)
It is not uncommon to find discrepancies in birth years/ages on Census Records. Accuracy depends on the informants and the enumerators taking the information.
(CW) Likely unrelated: A Thomas L. Whitten served in the 2nd Regiment, Maine Cavalry, in the Civil War.[22][23]
  • RESPONSE: No evidence for the above profile to have served in the Civil War.
(CW) Likely unrelated: A minor, C Atkinson, was the beneficiary of this Thomas's pension.[24]
  • RESPONES: No evidence for a pension or will of any sort for the above profile.
  • The PM for Emily Whitten has been contacted with a request to detach Emily from these parents. Thomas and Mary (Burnham) Whitten had six children born at Buxton. There are birth, marriage and or death records for these children and two census records (1850 and 1860) list all six children. There is no Emily.
  • The Ancestry site for this Thomas Whitten calls him Thomas Jefferson Whitten (1808-1890), of Saco, Maine, lists the same parents as the above profile; however married to Hephzibah Patterson with six daughters. It appears that the PM for Ancestry has conflated or incorrectly listed the parents for the Thomas Whitten of this profile.
  • FindAGrave notified of accurate birth and death dates on 15 March 2024, along with full WikiTree history.

Re: death 29 May 1879

There is a Death record here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F4ZY-LVH

Also, the headstone image does in fact show birth 1809. View the original image, zoom in and compare the number to other numbers and you will see it shows 1809, not 1808.

Whitten-1223 and Whitten-1969 do not represent the same person because: NOTE: This Thomas Whitten has been conflated with Thomas Whitten (1808-1879) (Whitten-1969). Since Whitten-1969 is also from Buxton, is it possible that this is his father? He is about 18 years younger.
