Price Stewart "Norman" Whitelaw ED was born on 10th May 1918 at Rose Bay, New South Wales, Australia. He was the eldest son of John Whitelaw and Esther Norman.[1] As his father before him and his two younger brothers contemporaneously, Norman created a successful career in the Royal Australian Artillery.[2]
Graduating from Royal Military College, Duntroon, prior to the war, Norman was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the militia forces. Upon declaration of war he transferred to the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, serving throughout the Second World War; enlisted 27th October 1939, discharged 3rd October 1945.[3] He was an officer in the 2/2nd Field Regiment, 6th Division, serving in the North African (against the italians) and Greece-Crete (against the Germans). He then trained to be one of a very few who became Naval Bombardment Support Liaison Officers, being later attached to HMAS Hobart.[4]
Whilst stationed in Australia for rest and re-training, Norman married Patricia Lovat Prichard in January 1943 in Melbourne, Victoria.[5]
After the war, he served in 2nd Field Regiment in the Citizen Military Forces, reaching the rank of Major and the posting of Battery Commander. He was awarded the Efficiency Decoration (ED) for twenty years service as an officer in the Militia. He was also awarded the Civil Service Medal.
Norman Whitelaw was President of the Royal Australian Artillery Association (Victoria) Inc, 1984-1987.
