CRUSHED UNDER FALLING TREE
Ear Whitehead, One of Chateaugay's Popular Young Men, Succumbed To Fatal Injuries.
A fatal accident that brought much sorrow to the community occurred last Friday morning when Earl Whitehead, the 19 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard E. Whitehead, received injuries from which he died a few hours later in the Alice Hyde hospital at Malone.
The Whitehead family occupy a farm about two miles north of the village, and between 10 and 11 o'clock Friday morning the young man accompanied by his father started for the woods to cut logs. When about seventy rods from the house they decided to fall [sic] a tree in an open field and were at this work when the accident toook place. They were in the act of sawing the tree when Mr. Whitehead's attention was called to the fact that the tree was about to fall in an opposite direction from what they had planned, and calling to his son of the danger, the young man made a leap for safety. Before he reached the safety zone the tree fell, striking him on the back and inflicted the fatal injury.
Mr. Whitehead pulled his son from under the tree and he was taken to the house, where Dr. Sprague soon arrived and gave every possible aid. Later in the evening the injured boy began to grow worse and an ambulance from Malone was called to convey him to the hospital. As they reached Malone Junction, Earl inquired if they were nearing the destination, and these were the last words he uttered, for within five minutes they were at the hospital anad the young man had passed away within another five minute's time.
Earl Whitehead was one of the promising and popular young men of the township. He was of fine character, upright and honorable in all things, and possessing a kindly manner he was well known and highly esteemed by all. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and was active in all its work, being treasurer of the Sunday School at the time of his demise. He graduated with honors from Chateaugay High School with the class of 1927. He took an agricultural course and was valedictorian of his class. Since that time he had resided at home and was actively engaged in farm work.
To the grief stricken family, to whom the deceased was devotedly attached, the sincerest sympathy of the entire community is extended in their great affliction.
Besides his parents, the deceased is survived by one brother, Roy S. Whitehead, of Chateaugay.
The funeral services were largely attended at the M. E. Church on Monday afternoon, Rev. M. E. Van Ornum officiating.[3]
