Biography

Matilda Charlotte White was born in 1867 in Chelmsford, Essex, England to Charles White and Mary (Frost) White. Her birth was registered in Chelmsford in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Frost.^[1]

• Matilda's parents were most likely common law, as no marriage record seems to exist and her mother eventually went back to using her maiden name.

In 1871 Matilda Charlotte White (age 3, Scholar) lived at Trues, Galleywood Common in Great Baddow, Essex with her father Charles (38, Poultry Dealer), mother Mary (30), and sister Ada (8, Scholar).^[2]

• Matilda's parents seem to have separated before 1881.

In 1881 Matilda White (age 14) lived at Atkins Yd in Norwich St Swithin, Norfolk with her mother Mary (42, Charwoman), sister Ada (18, Fowl Killer), and niece "infant White" [Lilian/Lily White] (0).^[3] Matilda's mother was listed as married, but her father was staying with his parents and his marital status was listed as single.

Matilda had a son out of wedlock:

1. Charles Smith White (1887-)

• It was common to give illegitimate children their father's surname as a middle name, so Charles' father may have been a Mr Smith.

In 1891 Matilda White (age 22, Fowl Dresser) lived at St Benedick Street in Norwich with her mother Mary (52, Fowl Dresser) and son Charles (3).^[4]

Matilda was in a relationship with a Mr Marrable from at least 1899, and though no marriage record has been located she took his surname. She was widowed (or at least separated and claiming to be widowed) by 1901.

Matilda had two sons with Mr Marrable:

1. Arthur Percy Marrable (1899-1981)
2. Ernest William Marrable (1901-)

In 1901 Matilda Marrable (age 33, Fowl Dresser) lived at 16 Ten Bell Lane in Norwich with her three sons: Charles [Smith White] (13, Errand Boy), Percy (2), and Ernest (0), and mother Mary White (63).^[5]

In 1911 Matilda Marrable (age 42, Fowl Dresser Poultry Trade) lived in Norwich with her two sons: Percy (12, School) and Ernest (10, School), as well as her mother Mary Frost (73).^[6]

Matilda Charlotte White Marrables passed away in 1931, aged 64 years. Her death was registered in Norwich in the third quarter of the year.^[7]
