Biography

George was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire in December 1858, the son of Alfred and Mary White.^[1] He immigrated with his parents to America in 1869, and became a naturalized citizen.

In 1870, the White family lived in North Providence city, Rhode Island. The household included Alfred, 38, a file cutter, with $300 in personal property; his wife Mary, 34; and their son George, 12, in school. Also living with them were Henry Stone, 44, a file cutter; and Henry Stone, 18, apprentice to a file cutter. All were born in England. ^[2]

In 1900, the White family lived on Dexter Street in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island. The household included Alfred, 68, b. June 1832. Alfred rented their house. He was a File forger; his wife Mary, 64, b. Nov 1836. They had been married 45 years and had had eight children, 2 of whom were living; their son George H., 41, b. Dec 1859, a salesman; and a grandson, Alfred P. White, 14, b. Oct 1886, a laundryman. All members of the household were born in England, except for the grandson, Alfred P., who was b. In Rhode Island. The parents of all were b. England. Alfred, Mary, and George immigrated in 1869. George had become a naturalized citizen. All could read and write.

Living nearby on Dexter Street was the Congdon family. The household included Oliver Congdon, 46, b. RI in Nov 1853, a laundryman, who owned their house with a mortgage; his wife Lizzie (Mary E. White) Oliver (George’s sister), b. June 1854 in England. She had immigrated in 1887. Lizzie/Mary and Oliver had been married five years, and had one child; their son Roy, 4, b. Jan 1896 in RI; and Oliver’s mother, Nancy Congdon, 79, b. Feb 1831 in RI. Her parents were b. in CT. It appears from the Cenus that she was widowed, and had been married 37 years, and had had one child. ^[3]

George White married Eliza C.

In 1920, the Whites lived at 820 Redondo Ave., Long Beach, California. All were born in England. The household included George H. White, 61, who owned their house without a mortgage, a Shipyard watchman, who immigrated in 1869, and became a naturalized citizen in 1891; his wife Eliza C., 44, could not read or write, immigrated in 1894, naturalized in 1903; and Alfred White (George’s father), 87, a widow, immigrated in 1867, not naturalized.^[4]
