US Congressman, Governor of Ohio. He was born in Elmira, New York and reared in Titusville, Pennsylvania. In 1895, after graduating from Princeton College, he taught school for three years before venturing to the Klondike to mine for gold. In 1902 he settled in Marietta, Ohio to work in the oil production business. He became active in the Democratic Party serving as a State representative from 1905 to 1908. He ran for the US Congress six times winning three times. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1911 to 1915 and from 1917 to 1919. He was the chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1920 to 1921. After his stint as party chairman he returned to Marietta and resumed his work in the oil business. In 1930 he was elected governor and served in that position from 1931 to 1935. He died in West Palm Beach, Florida.
