Sarah (West) Copping was born in Metheringham, Lincolnshire, England.

Birth and Baptism
Sarah, the illegitimate daughter of Ann Toynbee West, was born at Metheringham, Lincolnshire, on 27 April 1866.[1] She was baptized as an adult at St Andrew's church, Timberland, on 27 February 1882.[2][3]

1871 Census
In the 1871 census Sarah is living with her mother in the household of her mother's stepson Atkin West, who was the husband of her Aunt Margaret, at the Milner Arms, Timberland, Lincolnshire.[4]

1881 Census
In 1881 Sarah is still living in the household of Atkin West, but now at the Houghton Arms, Timberland.[5]

Illegitimate Daughter
Sarah had an illegitimate daughter Ethel May, born at Timberland on 28 December 1887.[6]

1891 Census
The 1891 census records that Sarah is in service as a nurse at 24 Lombard Street, Newark, to the family of Dr. Henry C. Lucas.[7]

1901 Census
By 1901 Sarah has returned to living with the household of Atkin West at Timberland.[8]

Marriage
Sarah married John Hague Copping (for whom Sarah's mother Ann had been housekeeper) by licence at St Andrew's church, Timberland, on 17 April 1902. Sarah was described as a Spinster, aged 36, resident at New Sleaford. No details of her father were given. Witnesses were Thomas Hey and John S Copping.[9][10][11]

Children
Sarah and John did not have any children together.

1911 Census
In 1911 Sarah is living with husband John at Timberland. The record states that they had no children.[12]

Husband's Death
Sarah's husband John, who was resident at Thorpe Tilney Hall, Thorpe Tilney, Lincolnshire, died at Skegness, Lincolnshire, on 7 September 1916.[13]

Husband's Probate
Sarah's husband's Probate was granted at the Lincoln registry on 15 January 1917 to Sarah, John Southern Copping, and Harry Pepper. John's effects were £47,886 15s 5d.[14][15]

1921 Census
In 1921 Sarah, now a widow, and retired, was still living at Thorpe Tilney Hall.[16]

1939 Register
In 1939 Sarah is still living at Thorpe Tilney Hall, but now with Farm Manager Robert Lynn Copping and his wife Josephine May.[17]

Death
Sarah, resident at Thorpe Tilney Hall, died at The Lawn Mental Hospital, Lincoln, on 15 April 1943.[18]

Probate
Probate was granted at the Lincoln Registry on 29 June 1843 to Harry Pepper retired farmer. Effects were £11000 16s 5d.[19][20]

Research Notes

Date of Birth
Sarah baptism record gave her date of birth as 27 April 1866. However, the 1939 register has it as 15 May 1866. Therefore I obtained Sarah's birth certificate from the UK GRO in order to resolve this disagreement. The date on the baptism record of 27 April 1866 is correct, as are all other details.
