Ælgifu was the daughter of Godwin and Gytha.[1]
Hardly anything is known about her. According to some accounts of the period when her brother Harold was detained by the future William the Conqueror in Normandy, Harold promised that one of his sisters would marry a Norman noble, and, if this is the case, Ælfgifu may have been the sister. An "Alvevæ soror Heraldi comitis" is referred to in the Domesday Book. She died before January 1066.[1][2] An Ælfgifu depicted in the Bayeux tapestry is unlikely to be her.[3]
