Æthelweard Wessex is a member of the House of Wessex.

Biography

Æthelweard was a son of Alfred the Great and Ealhswith.^[1][2][3][4] His birth date is uncertain, but Asser lists him as the last of the children of King Alfred who survived childhood^[2] and it may have been about 880.^[3]

Alfred the Great left Æthelweard a large number of estates in his will.^[5]

Æthelweard's name appears on charters of his brother Edward the Elder from the year 900.^[3]

The name of Æthelweard's wife is not known. He had at least two sons, both of whom died in 937 in the Battle of Brunanburh:

• Ælfwine^[3]

A Chronicle of Croyland Abbey by Ingulph names a third son, described as the eldest, called Turketul, who acted as Chancellor for King Æthelstan and subsequently became abbot of Croyland Abbey. No other source has been found to confirm this.^[3]

Æthelweard died on 16 October 922 and was buried at Winchester Cathedral.^[3][4][6]
